Gizmos Building Dna Answer Key
Student Exploration: Building DNA
Directions: Follow the instructions to go through the simulation. Respond to the questions and
prompts in the orange boxes.
5ocabulary: exerciseuble helix, DNA, enzyme, mutation, nitrogenous base, nucleoside, nucleotide, replication
Prior Knowledge Questions (Exercise these Before using the Gizmo.)
Deoxyribonucleic acid is an incredible molecule that forms the basis of life on Earth. Deoxyribonucleic acid molecules contain instructions for
building every living organism on Earth, from the tiniest bacterium to a massive blue whale. DNA too has the
ability to replicate, or brand copies of itself. This allows living things to abound and reproduce.
i. Wait at the DNA molecule shown at correct. What does it look similar?
It resembles a spiral staircase.
This shape is called a double helix.
2. Based on this motion-picture show, how practice you recall a DNA molecule makes a copy of itself?
(Hint: Look at the lesser 2 "rungs" of the ladder.)
The DNA strands separated DNA polymerase enzymes.
This then allows the molecule to re-create each strand using
the base-pairing rule.
Gizmo Warm-up
The Building Deoxyribonucleic acid Gizmo allows you to construct a DNA molecule and get
through the process of DNA replication. Examine the components that make up
a Dna molecule.
i. What are the two Deoxyribonucleic acid components shown in the Gizmo?
Nucleosides and Phosphates
2. A nucleoside has 2 parts: a pentagonal saccharide (deoxyribose) and a
nitrogenous base (in colour). When a nucleoside is joined to a phosphate, information technology
is chosen a nucleotide.
How many different nitrogenous bases do you lot run into?
